GSVKC
Scholarship
The Greater Sierra Vista Kennel Club
(GSVKC) is registered with and recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Club
members are dog owners, dog breeders and dog enthusiasts. The Club's area
of interest is Sierra Vista and the communities around it. The GSVKC holds
two AKC licensed dog shows each year; one in Sierra Vista in early May, the other
in conjunction with clubs in Tucson at the Pima County Fairgrounds in November.
The Club, a non-profit organization, sponsors spay/neuter clinics, classes in
dog obedience and dog handling, and a college scholarship each year with the
proceeds from the dog shows. For the spay/neuter clinics, the GSVKC pays
local veterinarians to spay/neuter dogs whose owners have applied for the no-cost
service. Experienced
club members conduct the obedience and handling classes.
The
Club scholarship, intended for use toward a degree in animal health
care, is awarded annually to a selected graduating senior from the
Sierra Vista, Benson, Bisbee, St. David or Tombstone high schools.
Eligible students who plan to pursue such a degree are encouraged
to apply for the scholarship. A committee appointed by the
GSVKC Board of Directors will determine the award based on the submitted
applications. The Committee may, at its discretion, conduct interviews
(formal or informal) of the applicants. The scholarship will be in
the amount of at least one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). Normally,
an alternate is also selected. Since the award will be made payable
to both the recipient and the educational institution where the winner
has been accepted as a student, the use of the funds must be agreed
upon by the two payees. The money can be spent for anything
that furthers the education of the recipient. The scholarship
is considered an educational grant.
Therefore, no recipient shall be required to repay the award in whole
or in part. No application will be rejected nor award made based
on race, religion, gender or age. Each recipient is requested to
provide a short written report to the GSVKC upon completion of his/her
first two semesters of college. The name of the recipient will be
announced at the appropriate award ceremony conducted by their high
school. The
actual award will be made upon presentation to the Club of proof
of acceptance by and enrollment in an accredited educational institution.
Neither the award nor the amount of the award is affected by any
other scholarship(s) received. The applicant is responsible for submitting
a completed application in accordance with the attached instructions.
Application
forms and instructions may be obtained from counselors of the high
schools named above or downloaded using the links below (available either as MSWord documents or PDF files.)
